A toilet that won’t stop running flushes your hard-earned money down the drain. This type of leak can waste a lot of water and really drive up your bill when not dealt with immediately. Check the Float
Once the water inside your toilet tank reaches a certain level, the float stops water intake. If, however, the float is set above the height of the overflow tube, the water in the tank will never reach the shutoff height and will run continuously. If your float is set too high, adjust it to a lower position. With most toilets, all you need to do to do this is push a clip or loosen a screw. Set the float to about an inch below the top of the overflow tube.
Inspect the Flapper
Your toilet’s flapper opens and closes the valve between the tank and the toilet bowl. When you flush, the flapper opens, allowing water to travel from the tank to the bowl. When not working properly, it can allow water to continuously leak into the bowl. This problem often occurs as the result of a chain that is too short or is caught on another part of the of the plumbing. Adjust the length of the chain to make sure the flapper operates as it should.
Look for Worn Out Parts
If you’ve checked the float and the flapper and you are still having problems, other worn out parts may be to blame. Your fill valve may no longer be able to prevent water from coming into the tank. Your flapper could also be damaged. In either of these cases, you will need to replace the worn out component to solve your problem.
